Step one to building a self bow

By Robert Cannon of Great Wealth Secrets

Have you ever wanted to build your own bow to hunt with? Well this is step one on how to do just that. First you need to decide what kind of wood you would like to make it from. There are several types of wood that are well suited for this. My favorite is osage orange which is know by several different names around the country such as hedge apple. If you are a newbie at bow building osage is a difficult wood to work with so wait until you have a few bows under your belt before you try this wood. For you first use a wood like maple, hickory, or elm. These trees are plentiful though out the United States so you should have no problem finding a suitable tree. If you are using a tree on your own property that is great. If not make sure you have permission to cut the tree you have chosen.

So how do you pick a good tree. First pick one with free on knots where limbs use to be. These knots will weaken the finished bow. Next you want the grain to be as straight as possible so look at the bark on the tree. Try to read the bark to make sure it goes straight up the tree. You may not be great at this at first but you will get better. Next you want a log 72 inches long so measure and mark the tree. Now your ready to cut down the tree. Break out the chainsaw and cut the tree down. Cut off your 72 inch section. Now for the last part of step on. Glue both ends of your log with with a good wood glue. This will keep the log from checking or in other words splitting through the center. It will force the moisture out through the bark. Now it is a waiting game because the wood will need to dry for at least 4 months. More on how to check to see if the wood is dry enough to start your bow in step 2 later.
